Name of the Database:
The title of your database. Please choose a name that is meaningful and understandable in a global context. Potentially accompanied by an acronym.
(required field)
Subtitle:
(fact sheet)
Optionally, you can provide an explanatory subtitle, which is not considered as part of the proper name of the database and thus is not capitalised. Subtitles are strongly recommended in cases when the proper name does not clearly indicate the scope of the database in terms of geography and and included vegetation types.

Scope
(fact sheet)
282 plots with phyto-sociological data (including topographical variables and 181 analyses soil samples) on high mountain vegetation (mostly dwarf shrub steppes and deserts; floodplain meadows) in a grazed rangeland (Eastern Pamirs of Tajikistan).
A concise verbal outline which kind of data are collected (i.e. criteria for inclusion)
Abstract
(fact sheet)
The Eastern Pamirs of Tajikistan are an arid high mountain plateau with wide valleys around 4000 m.a.s.l. separated by ranges with peaks around 5000 m.a.s.l. The breakup of the Soviet Union and the associated independence of Tajikistan in 1991 resulted in significant political and socio-economic changes in this area, also with impacts on the vegetation. Shortages of financial resources led to a reduced pasture rotation causing overgrazing in some areas. The lack of energy supply led to an increased extraction of dwarf shrubs for fuel wood. Here, a vegetation-plot database for the high mountain pasture of the Pamir Plateau is presented (GIVD ID: SA-00-002, http://www.givd.info/ID/SA-00-002) that may serve as a basis for studies on alpine vegetation ecology, pasture ecology, livestock grazing impact, environmental change, and pasture management. It consists of 282 georeferenced vegetation plots including dwarf shrub steppes and deserts, floodplain meadows, alpine herb-grass mats, and scree vegetation.

State of the database.
planned
: There are concrete plans to establish a database of the given scope, but no vegetation-plots are included so far. This category allows the announcement of projects in order to facilitate research cooperation and avoid double work.
emerging
: The database exists in a preliminary version (e.g. reduced functionality or in a database system deviating from the one planned for the final database) and contains only few vegetation-plots so far.
ongoing capture
: The database is fully functional and data are added continuously, but only a fraction of the data within the scope is captured so far.
completed and continuing
: The database is fully functional and the vast majority of past data within the scope have already been captured; now basically only newly made vegetation-plots are added.
finished
: The database is available but there are no longer activities to add further data. "

Comments on plot-design
The prepared sampling procedure comprises features of preferential, systematic and random sampling. A nested design with two different sample levels was used: Level-1 plots, with an extension of 60m×60 m, are the core element of the study. The size was determined in relation to the remotely sensed data used to predictively map the vegetation. They were set up systematically in preferentially selected valleys, distributed over the entire study area, attempting to set at least one plot to the valley bottom and to the two slopes, respectively. In three example-valleys, such cross sections were extended to several transects along the valley’s longitudinal section. This systematic transect method was completed by further preferentially set plots in very ample or remote areas. The extraction of remotely sensed data, the description of the environmental variables and the collection of mixed soil samples were based on this sample-level. Level-2 plots were used to sample species cover with a quadrat or relevé-method (see Küchler and Zonneveld, 1988). A quadrat was delimited and species cover was estimated by a modified Braun-Blanquet-approach (see Information on cover scale). According to Chytrý and Otýpková (2003) the size of these phytosociological recordings was set to 16m² (4m×4 m), which is recommended for most types of herbaceous vegetation, such as vegetation of screes, alpine herbaceous vegetation or semi-desert scrub. Inside each level-1 plots, four level-2 plots were established randomly by the so-called random-walk principle (Spitzer, 1976). This starts from an arbitrary position inside the level-1 plot using random numbers for direction and number of steps. Whenever the border of a level-1 plot was reached it was moved on following the rule ’arrival angle equals emergent angle’. The final position marks the center of the level-2 plot. Furthermore, data on grazing pressure was acquired on this level. Finally, the data from the four plots was aggregated and its median considered as representative for the specific level-1 plot.
The following numbers refer to data you really have, but not to data you are going to collect in the future. So, please no potential vegetation-plots!
